The Story of 4 Journeys
Lee Spencer BEM, The Rowing Marine
Lee had a fulfilling 24-year career as a Royal Marine Commando.
After coming through three operational tours of Afghanistan unscathed, Lee lost his right leg after being hit by an engine block as he was helping a motorist who had crashed into the central reservation of the M3 in Surrey in 2014. Although his right leg was severed in the impact, the serviceman’s training kicked in and he was able to instruct bystanders on how to tie a tourniquet and help paramedics to save his life.
In 2015, Lee set-off to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in just a rowing boat. The Row2Recovery team of four injured veterans had just 3 legs between them. In February 2016, some 46 days, 6 hours and 49 minutes later they rowed into Antigua and the record books as the world’s first physically disabled crew of four to row any ocean.
Following this, Lee became the world’s first physically disabled person to row from mainland Europe to mainland South America solo and unsupported. Lee Spencer, The Rowing Marine, broke the able bodied record by an astonishing 36 days and also broke the record for the longest solo and unsupported ocean row by a physically disabled person, a total of 3 Guinness World records.
Lee’s personal story is one of courage, inspiration and so much more!

Overcoming Adversity and Resilience
Life During and After the Battlefield
Liz McConaghy, Chinook Crew Chick
Liz’s Best Selling Autobiography ‘Chinook Crew Chick’ is an honest and humorous account of her ‘high’s and lows in a warzone’ and how her experiences flying on the Chinook have changed and moulded her into the woman she has become.
From dodging bullets to saving soldiers and witnessing the brutality and loss of war, Liz talks of how she found herself bringing the battlefield home, despite her fighting days being over. Liz’s story offers hope to those who have also found themselves in the darkest of places, who are looking for the tools within themselves to begin to rebuild a pathway to a new life. She is now an ambassador for mental health and specifically PTSD within the Veteran community.
Liz stands as an example that PTSD does not have to be your identity, it can simply be a chapter of your life that can be learned from and most importantly moved on from.
• The dangers of ‘personal mission creep’ and the cumulative effect that can subsequently have on your brain.
• The importance of monitoring your own mental health and wellbeing and how to build resilience around that.
• Top Tips going forward for looking after both you and those around you who are suffering with their mental health.

Behaviour and Culture Change
It’s Not You, It’s Me – Collective Responsibility
Bob Cummins, Director, Sodak
That old adage, it’s not you, it’s me… but really, it’s probably both of us!
We hold people responsible for their health and safety. We might even discipline them, hoping that they will change under their own volition. But our behaviour is constantly being manipulated by the environment we are in, and one of the biggest manipulators of our behaviour is other people’s behaviours.
What I say and do, affects what you say and do and vice versa. In fact, what I say and do affects you more than it affects me…We are collectively responsible for the behaviours we as a group get. Collective responsibility is far more powerful than personal responsibility.
• Behaviour never happens in isolation the context is always driving the behaviour.
• Holding individuals responsible for their behaviour, without examining the causal elements from the environment will lead you to the wrong conclusion and ineffective plans for improvement.
• Use collective responsibility to help create teams that look out for each other and self-improve.
Climate Change and Sustainability
No Health in an Unsafe Environment
Ed Gillespie, Writer, Poet and Futurist
Ed will take us through the omnishambles/polycrisis of today with raw honest truth and humour, explain how we got into such a ‘hot mess’ and how we might best begin to wriggle our way out if it – together.
• A broad understanding of the urgent interconnected challenges and mega-trends that are aligning to create today’s ‘polycrisis’ of climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality etc.
• Key insights into the errors, mindsets and mistakes that have got us into this ‘hot mess’, often with good intentions.
• Creative ideas, attitudes and approaches that might unlock the enormous transformative potential of change.

Legal Advice and Updates
Inquests – The H&S Angle
Mark Scoggins, Solicitor Advocate, Fisher Scoggins Waters LLP
Inquests have their own rules of procedure and evidence, very different from the conventional court system of adversarial trial. The evidence they hear and conclusions they reach have a large influence on whether criminal prosecution follows or a compensation claim is pursued. In recent years the Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) report has breathed new life into the coronial system. In work-related fatality cases (and many road traffic deaths) the inquest will examine risk assessments, method statements and industry guidance, demand the disclosure of post-incident internal reviews, and take evidence which bears on the same issues which will be in play in a criminal trial or a civil claim to compensation.
- The importance of inquest evidence and conclusions in decisions by CPS, HSE, ORR and other regulators to launch criminal prosecution for manslaughter or alleged health and safety lapses, even where established failings made no causal contribution to a particular death.
- The significance of PFD reports in raising safety standards across sectors and industries and highlighting systemic weaknesses, sometimes far more broadly than the particular narrow circumstances of the death under investigation.
- Inquests are in many cases dress rehearsals for subsequent civil and criminal proceedings. The evidence they take is for the most part admissible further down the chain of post-incident court processes. Though their conclusions cannot attribute blame, matters of negligence and worse can be explored in the evidence, and witnesses put under pressure to admit failings.
Inspirational Leadership
Never Give In
Major Scotty Mills, Royal Marines (Retired)
“It was never my intention to join the Royal Marines, but a chance encounter changed my life and I never looked back”… Major Scotty Mills has led the kind of life he could never have dreamt of. From the backstreets of South London, he has since gone onto serve his country and lead Britain’s Commandos around the globe as a Royal Marines Officer.
More recently, as an advisor to the FA, he inspired Gareth Southgate, Harry Kane and the England Football Team to the World Cup Semi Final through innovative leadership and team cohesion training, that saw them able to come together and to perform when the pressure was on in Russia.
Scotty’s incredibly compelling journey is filled with exceptional stories of the power of human inspiration … how effective teamwork is more important than individual ability, how to really understand people and feel how they feel and so many more golden nuggets to help change hearts and minds!
