Understanding what people throw away can reveal opportunities that broad recycling messages miss. Leonardo UK’s Electronics and Cyber Divisions have used waste assessments to connect environmental objectives with practical changes in catering, workplaces and technical operations.

In its submission to The SHE Show Inspiring Change Awards 2026, Leonardo UK demonstrates how they have integrated waste reduction into day-to-day operations by focusing on waste prevention, reuse, and employee engagement. Through detailed assessments of waste streams, teams identified practical opportunities to reduce unnecessary waste across workplace, catering, and operational activities.

Actions included improving waste segregation, increasing the use of reusable items, redistributing surplus resources, supporting on-site composting, donating or reusing furniture and equipment, and exploring innovative approaches to repurpose materials that would otherwise be discarded. These initiatives were supported by cross-functional collaboration, employee awareness programmes, and regular performance monitoring.

Leonardo UK’s experience highlights the value of understanding the sources of waste, involving employees in identifying solutions, and embedding circular economy principles into everyday decision-making. It demonstrates that a combination of practical reduce and reuse initiatives, behavioural change, and continuous improvement is helping Leonardo UK cut its waste while delivering environmental, operational, and community benefits.
