Employees often know where materials are wasted, energy is used unnecessarily or established routines could improve. The Casey Group has created a way for that knowledge to influence its sustainability programme, supported by specialist carbon measurement and leadership oversight.

The construction business’s submission to The SHE Show Inspiring Change Awards 2026 describes the development of its Green Team. A voluntary group drawn from different departments, the team gives colleagues a forum to raise environmental challenges, test ideas and help shape priorities across offices and construction sites.

Casey’s challenge was to bring existing activity together and give future improvements a clearer direction. Employees wanted opportunities to contribute, while clients were seeking greater transparency around carbon reduction and responsible procurement. Early Green Team discussions covered waste, energy, travel and purchasing, but also identified the need for better measurement and technical support.

The business partnered with sustainability specialists Positive Planet to establish carbon baselines, measure emissions and develop Carbon Reduction Plans. This gave employee ideas a more structured basis for action. The Green Team continued to identify practical opportunities, while specialist support helped the business understand its footprint and set targets.

The group now has 12 representatives and meets six times a year. Its Green Light newsletter, issued twice annually, shares progress, explains environmental topics and describes work by different teams. By the time of the submission, six editions had been produced and more than 160 employees had completed carbon awareness training.

Supporting newsletters show how this approach translates into operational activity. Teams identified sites at which to monitor packaging waste, explored reuse of excess materials and reviewed waste management arrangements to improve access to consistent information. A greywater pilot at the Old Springs site and reviews of site welfare cabins created opportunities to learn from practical trials before making wider decisions.

Other work has focused on energy and transport. Casey’s August 2025 newsletter reported a switch to a renewable electricity tariff at head office. Fleet software provides information including fuel consumption and idling, while Green Team discussions have explored site power and lighting options with suppliers. These activities connect environmental questions with equipment and services that teams already manage.

Procurement and client relationships provide further opportunities. Carbon awareness has been added to supply chain prequalification, and colleagues have discussed carbon reduction with suppliers. The March 2025 newsletter also described work with Oldham Council to identify materials with lower embodied carbon for future highways schemes, showing how project discussions can influence choices before construction begins.

The supporting July 2026 Carbon Reduction Plan for P Casey & Co Limited reports reductions of 17% in Scope 1 emissions, 38% in Scope 2 and 26% in reported Scope 3 emissions. It compares August 2024–July 2025 with the August 2023–July 2024 baseline. These figures relate to that company and the emissions included in its plan, rather than the whole Casey Group footprint.

The plan links progress to lower stationary fuel use, reduced electricity consumption and changes involving operational waste and business travel. At group level, board review, formal reporting and policy development provide oversight. The Green Team maintains the connection with employees, so measurement and governance can inform practical choices across the business.

For the wider SHE community, Casey’s experience shows how employee involvement and technical expertise can support each other. A forum for ideas creates ownership; consistent measurement helps determine where effort should go. Regular meetings, training and communication then give colleagues a way to stay involved as individual initiatives develop into continuing changes in how work is planned and delivered.
