Established in 2009, The SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Show conference and exhibition is a national event held at three locations across the UK. The annual series of events offers a dynamic line-up of speakers designed to inspire, motivate and provide new and innovative thought patterns to over 200 delegates. Initially targeting senior SHE professionals from cross sectoral industries – who form the vast majority of the audience. The forward thinking and out of the box nature of the event also attracts Senior Managers/Directors outside of the SHE arena. Created with the ambition to change thought patterns and help make a difference to how people, feel, think and importantly behave to encourage safe working environments, emphasising the importance of creating a successful SHE culture within any organisation and encourages all departments to resonate with the view that Safety, Health and Environment should be seen as a value and not just a priority.
This year’s prestigious conference is all about people, behaviour and culture change and focuses on six key elements:
- Overcoming Adversity and Resilience
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Behaviour and Culture Change
- Climate Change and Sustainability
- Inspirational Leadership
- Legal Advice and Updates
Duncan Aspin, HSEQS Director, VolkerStevin will facilitate the event and will be joined by:
– Justin Manley
– Dr Helen Garr
– Bob Cummins
– Chris Hines MBE
– Stewart Hill
– Mark Scoggins
Our first speaker of the day will be Justin Manley, who will cover Overcoming Adversity and Resilience. Justin was a highly skilled pipe technician and a team leader within the utilities industry. On the 28th October 2015, the decision to attend to a burst water main with a colleague proved to be one of life or death.
Whilst repairing a burst water main, a miscommunication resulted in the mains water being switched on before the job had been completed and the pressure of the water forcing a torque wrench into his face at around 80mph.
He was knocked unconscious and was at the bottom of a hole which was rapidly filling with water. Justin will openly share the devastating consequences of that day and how fatigue was a contributory factor of what virtually cost him his life.
Next to the stage will be Dr Helen Garr, who will cover the Mental Health and Wellbeing element. Helen will provide us with hints and tips to become better at stress by uncovering your inner superhero. You will learn how your favourite childhood superhero and real life heroes can help you manage even the most stressful situations.
Following Helen will be Bob Cummins, who will cover our Behavioural and Culture Change element. Bob will explain how you can create a culture of certainty through Behavioural Integrity. He will discuss how it can be measured and purposefully improved, which in turn, will create safer, more productive places of work.
Next will be Chris Hines MBE to cover our Climate Change and Sustainability element. Chris will talk about what skills and equipment do you and your business need to pack for the journey into the coming decades… Whether we like it or not, whether we have realised it or not, the next few years will see transformational change in society, business and the very way we interact with each other and the environment. This talk will highlight the “must do’s” and dynamics of change to ensure not only personal and business survival, but also, hopefully, sustainable success.
Our penultimate speaker will be Stewart Hill, who will cover our Inspirational Leadership element. Stewart’s life lessons have been forged in the furnace of adversity, high pressure environments, isolation, career loss, injury and death. Never have his experiences been relevant to so many. The leadership techniques Stewart used instinctively in Helmand Province have been improved through living with a traumatic brain injury and mastering his brain impairments. Stewart will show how:
– Strong leaders inspire their followers through pathos.
– Compassion, trust and courage are the foundation of teams that gel and work together, generating loyalty for the company and a bond within the team that leads to outstanding performance
– Getting leadership right in an organisation can be the difference between success and failure. Inspirational leadership is about taking individuals and your teams along with you by moving them from merely functioning, through operating effectively to inspirational leadership amongst all team members.
Our final speaker will be Mark Scoggins, who will cover our Legal Advice and Updates element. Mark will talk about, the composition and age distribution of the nation’s workforce is changing, and the pace of change is accelerating. By the end of 2021, around 40% of those in full-time employment or substantial part-time work will be aged over 50: in 2000 the proportion was around 33% and by 2030 is expected to be above 45%. Older workers are staying longer in post through choice or financial necessity. They will, as a generality, have increasing health issues and practical limitations on their physical robustness. Younger additions to the workforce bring vitality and ingrained IT skills, but there is significant concern that the continuing trend toward homeworking and the predominance of sedentary computer usage in place of traditional office work, meetings and face-to-face dealings, spurred on but not caused by the COVID pandemic, poses a threat to their mental as well as physical health. The HSE flagged up principal risks in a 2018 strategic report but little tangible progress seems to have been made towards addressing them.
The evening prior, The SHE Show Team have a brilliant night lined up. There’s the opportunity to network and meet with old and new friends. It kicks off with a Networking Drinks Reception followed by Networking Evening Dinner, sponsored by Ideagen Plc.
The after-dinner speaker presentation is also one not to be missed…
Kristian Thomas, Gymnast and Olympic Medallist. In 2017 Kristian retired from international gymnastics, bringing to an end a career that resulted in him winning multiple medals at Commonwealth, European and World Championships. Kristian competed at two Olympic Games winning a historic bronze medal in London 2012, and captained the men’s team in London 2012 & Rio 2016. Since retiring, Kristian became only the second person to be inducted into the British Gymnastics Hall of Fame, and has recently joined the Premier League as Player Care & Engagement Manager.
